Was at JB 77-78 I think it was C company our building faced Headquarters to the left was the PX and Club.
Went on REFORGER 78 plus a lot of Graf ect. Black motorpool PLt Sarge I think we called him Budda. I sold my VW Bug to a e-5 dork after me and 7 other guys went to a Nazarath concert. On the way back I blew the engine. Just after I sold it the guys threw it half way into a dumpster. Just remember one guy Goodbird or something like that. A few miles out was our local downrange we would go on alert and bug out there. Thank God we never had the ballon go up. Lots of stuff to remember.

I was stationed at Johnson Barracks,Assigned to Headquarters Company,24th Engineer Battalion, from 1966 thru 1969. I was a Specialist#5 E-5. Initially, I was Battalion Mail Clerk, and later in the Adjutants Office as Courts & Boards Clerk, doing court martials. In personal time I was a guitarist and played with various groups in Germany.

was a journeyman 12B at JB from 1985 - 1987, most of it in CC Rock 1st platoon then in MCM.
Good to see CC Rock well represented on this board, especially Sgt. Shick (I'm still sorry to this day the cadre made you carry that heavy rock for my goof-up at PCT in 1986). I remember Willey, Maestas, Grobusch, and was hoping to find Romer and the others.
Gotta say 1986 was an incredible year for me in 1st platoon - we did PCT then got that luxury guard duty in Garmisch. Hope to hear from the rest of you.

I was in the 16th engineering battalion D Company at Johnson Barracks from 1984 to 87. Good times. I went back to Furth nearly every other summer for about 10 years. I was surprised to read about the barracks being converted to car lots and other businesses. As I recall, by the mid-90's parts of it had been converted to civilian housing.

Hello everyone! I'm Dirk Sullivan or you might remember me as SGT Sullivan I was at Johnson Barracks from 80-82 E Company AVLB crew. We had some good times together. I have many great memories while at Johnson and it was most definitely some of the best times of my life. I had to pull out the old pics to remember some of the names. I will try to post some of these pics on the site. Some of the AVLB gang you might remember? SFC Moske, SGT Felts, SSG Herman, SGT Gomez, SGT Dugger, PVT Rysavy, PFC Eddy, PVT Rivera? Others I can't remember since my memory is fading, sorry. Studies show that good German beer does help reduce memory loss. Drink more beer!!! I say " PROST" to my old buddies from Johnson!!! You guys ROCK!

Hello to everyone that was stationed at Johnson Barracks-C Co. 16th Engineers Btn. in Fürth from 1983-1987; I left in July '87 for the States and decided to give it up in May '88 after achieveing my personal goal. I then returned to Nbg.-Fürth area where I still live yet today and doing just great. Like mentioned in the forum from the Barracks is absolutely nothing left over, all built up new. My favorites were Sgt. Jackson, Sgt. Smith and Sgt. Culley (Porsche?)

I was in the 16th Engineers from the 84-85. I was a 12F but I can't remember what company I was in. My 1st sgt was 1st sgt Gillery(I hope this is the correct spelling). I used to play golf at a post not far from JB. Some of the people I remember are: Bill Starcher, Sgt Neadeux, and Pvt Guerro to name just a few. I remember a very funny Samoan that used to say, "do you wanna beef bro" can anyone remember his name?
lgald@yahoo.com (Louis):
if it was C co there was a 12f named sgt taufeetee and he used to hang out with a big samoan dude, they would work out together in the little gymn we had there. I remember it was hard for anyone to work out cause them boys would have the bar loaded down with all the weights. I used to work out with Chuck (Conan) and when sgt. taufeetee was in there we would have to wait cause there werent anymore weights left:)

1984-87- Assined to E Co (Cpt Taylor)from January - October. ( I have the company picture from E Co from around August 1984 if ANYONE interested). Was the Only unit supply to pass battalion inspection & was offered job to run the 1st AD CIF at Montieth Bks. Stayed there until it was completely turned over to civilian's.
Then went to HHC and worked at the S-4, ran it for a few month's while SFC Roberts was in school. Remeber Cpt Hamilton, Joe McGrady,Santiago,
Then went to C Co as Supply Sgt. Cpt Watson & Red headed, freckle faced 1SG, Lt Anderson etc. Those were the good ole day's, but was glad to get out of there after Robert's ripped off the DRMO/PDO of the Jeep.
I remeber going out to the german training area and four wheeling all the time. What was the name of that Gasthaus across from JB?
Jack Jordan:
I remember the bar across the street. We would call it the Lilli Marlene bar. That was in 1959-1960. Take care Jack

I was stationed at Johnson Barracks in Company B in 1959-1960. We all had a great time there. It is almost 50 years ago. It doesn’t seem possible. At that time it was the 24th Engineer Battalion. I was with Company B. Our platoon Sergeant was Sgt. Washington We were using M-1 Rifles at that time. Check out my picture of the M-1 Rife Inspection on our bunks. The commander of the battalion at that time was Lt. Col. Pearse. We nick named him (Axe Handle) because carried an axe handle instead of a swagger stick. We set a record at that time for building and crossing the Danube with a pontoon bridge (1 hr and 29 minutes) I wonder if that record is still standing. It doesn’t seem possible that Johnson Barracks is no long there. I don’t remember any canals on Schwabacker Strasse.
Does anyone remember the beer garden bar in back of Johnson Barracks on the way to the main PX. We called it the garden. Does anyone know when they built canals on Schwabacker. I don’t remember and canals maybe my memory is failing. This is a great site. It brings back a lot of memories.
Mike G.:
I enjoyed your pictures, I was stationed at Johnson Barracks from '77 - '79 and then again from '82 - '85. I believe the canal was started in the mid-sixties and finished in the early seventies. Take Care -

Thought it might be interesting to relate how I found this site. Last year Dec'08-Jan'09 my wife & I were backpacking in N.Vietnam on the Chinese border. Riding on a local bus loaded with about 100 Vietnamese was 1 other foreigner, he was my age, German & born & raised in Zirndorf right beside Pinder Bks. I told him I was at JB 1976-79 & he knew it well. He used to go to Open House during Ger-American Days back then. He took a room in the same hotel & for the next 2 days he & I talked about Furth, Nbg & JB & he told stories how JB was gone, Pinder too although they left the orig. gate standing, the Darby Housing Area was now apts & other stuff. Patrizier Beer was bought-out by Tucher although Das Gute Zirndorfer is still going. He said his favorite fussball club today was near the old PX site & we discussed where it was but the only one I could recall was in the Housing Area which you'd pass when taking the back way shortcut to the Main PX from JB. I remember stopping in there once to collect the deckel. Before we parted he dug in his pack & gave me a souvenir matchbox that read PX Sport Club Furth. When I got down to Hanoi I went to the Search Engine, typed in Johnson Bks & found this site. Small world, huh?

My father was in the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, who had the motto "Brave Rifles". He may have been at Johnson Barracks in 1957-early 1958. His name is William and he went by Bill or Billy. He was dating my mom at the time. She is a native of Nuremberg who was working in Dambach. Her name is Hannelore, Honey, and had long red hair. If anyone remembers them, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thought my wife at the time was coming to Germany, thought wrong. LOL Got the Tucher runs a few times from too many trips accross the street. Anyone got a knot? I got a soda can with some holes in it. Sure do wish I could get some Salvator or some Untern Biebert. Sunk my truck to the axels once dropping fuel to water point.

I was assigned to 3rd Plt and would like to see if any of my old buddies are still around. ie: SGT Efrain Burgos, Sd Ldr, PFC Asevero (Trinidad and Tobago), PVT Gutierrez, PFC Myers, SFC Henderson, PVT Daughtery, PFC Gonzalez (Would always cry when he got druck). Good old times running through the canal, going down town to eat and drink, and stopping by the PX at WO darby (Kaserne) I think this is how it is spelled. Oh, before I forget I want to say hi! to my friends from "El conjunto Boricua" we used to play Puerto Rican music at the Enlisted club at Johnson barracks. My nickname at that time was "Coamito". Any way, take care buddies and God bless you all!

I was in C Company with Randy Norris, Dan Flanders, Clyde Strickland among others from 7/77-7/79. Does anyone remember O'Brien (he was either Irish or English) who worked in R & U, and if you do, whatever happened to him? Randy Norris is the only one that I have been in touch with, and I heard once from Don Bebo, Rick Wright and a couple of others from the company for that time frame. Hope to hear from some of you. Cheers!
Stan, Medics 77-79:
He was English. I know this because he would wander over to the dispensary and bug John McDade who is Irish. They would have the most funniest arguments.

Stan,
Do you by chance know whatever happened to O'Brien? He always wanted me to go to the U.K. with him and visit his family. I regret that I didn't go with him; he was such a blast. He used to call me Ballie.
There also was a Spec 5, rather tall individual with blonde hair and slender, who was a medic in the battalion. I can't remember his name. He along with a number of other medics on every monday afternoon after last formation those of us who were lucky enough to be in the fatman's program would weigh in. He spoke up for me when a number of us would have to go in front of LtC Kouns with our weight progress. What was his name and whatever happened to him as well.
Thanks for the previous information about O'Brien.
Cheers!

Stan:
No I do not know where O'Brien went after those days.
We had a spec 6 whose name was Linderman, Then there was Keith StAlbin.

I was at JB from 77 to 80 Bco. Sorry to see that it is gone. Had a wild time there. I still remember the first day that I got to Jb. Must of been fruit day. About a thousand oranges and apples were thrown at the bus. Hundreds of guys yelling out the windows.

Hello to all,
I frequently reminisce of the years spent at Johnson Barracks. I was assigned to Charlie Company from 1987-1989.
There are many guys I'd like to get in touch with from those days and I was very excited to see Louis aka "G-Man" message posted here.
Louis, I'll send you an email today.
My hopes are that everyone and their families are well and that every man who served in the 16th has had a happy, successful life.
Regards,
Charles
